Collin pulledhis car into the mall’s parking lot and into a spot. Quinn glanced over at him, wondering what he was doing.

He unbuckled and motioned toward the sliding doors. “Macie needs Christmas presents.”

Feeling like a complete idiot for letting her confusing feelings for Collin get in the way of planning the perfect Christmas for Macie, she nodded as she unbuckled and climbed out of the car. This was ridiculous. How had she let herself become this distracted?

They walked, side by side, into the mall. Quinn couldn’t help but feel the closeness of his hand as it swung next to her own. Did he want to hold it as badly as she wanted him to? Was she a complete idiot to think that he might want something more?

His phone rang just as they got inside. He answered it. From what she could make out it was Ada, his assistant. She had just landed. Collin said something about letting Horace know that he should leave. He hung up with Ada and a short conversation later, instructed Horace to go pick her up and hung up with him as well.

He slipped his phone into his pocket and turned to study Quinn. She’d slowed her walking, not quite sure where he wanted to go. All she knew was the numbers in her bank account and they were meager at best. Not really conducive to mall shopping. But she didn’t want Collin to know just how broke she really was.

Collin seemed to be waiting for her to take the lead. He glanced around the store windows before turning to meet her gaze. “I’ve never really shopped for a little girl before, so…” He shoved his hands into his front pockets and shrugged. “Where to?”

Realizing that he wasn’t going to be okay with them leaving until they had presents for Macie in hand, Quinn made her way over to the directory and scanned the shops.

“Betty’s Toy Barn is a floor up and to the left.”

Collin’s gaze followed her directions and he nodded. “Perfect. Betty’s Toy Barn it is.”

Quinn stifled her feelings of embarrassment and moved toward the escalator. She stepped on and Collin got onto the step behind her, bringing him dangerously close to her. She tensed, waiting for him to move, but he didn’t. He remained a hairs length away, resting his arm on the belt and looking as if their proximity wasn’t affecting him at all.

Not wanting to be the only one who was reading into things, Quinn focused on the stores on the second floor that were now coming into view. Places she couldn’t afford to shop in. Ever. She peeked back at Collin. It didn’t look as if he were thinking about the hefty prices of the mall stores.

What must that be like?

They got to the end of the escalator and she stepped off. Collin did the same and they walked in silence to the toy store. After stepping inside, Quinn gritted her teeth. She was that much closer to having the awkward conversation about why she was only buying one or two toys for her daughter.
